Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.
Today, the United States will observe the Independence Day holiday. As I sit here pondering the roots of this holiday, compared to the state of our society today, I wonder if we really are “independent” anymore.
I ponder that question because we used to have the “freedom” to say anything that we wanted to say, merely because we wanted to say it, but I am not so sure that we have that freedom anymore. With more means of communication available to us, more exposure publicly via social media and the like, it appears that we are less free to say anything that we want to say, for fear that someone will actually disagree with us. I am not so sure that is freedom.
I remember when we were free to worship the deity of our choice. As a Christian, I worship the God of the Bible, but I have known people all of my life who worshiped other deities, and they were free to do so, just as I had been….but it appears these days that a practicing Christian can be ostracized, criticized, demonized and even sued in court for worshiping and obeying the Deity of our choice, the LORD Jesus Christ. I am not so sure that is freedom.
When I was a child, a baby had the freedom to live in the safest place in the world for a baby: inside his mother’s womb. However, in January 1973, that freedom was taken away. Not all babies are afforded the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Sixty million babies in this country have died as they were minding their business inside their mothers wombs.
All that said, let’s ponder the words of the psalmist in Psalm 33. Only the nation who is “free” to worship the God of the Bible, to obey His statues, and live for His glory is actually free at all.
If you do not know the LORD Jesus Christ as your Savior, stop what you are doing and pray to Him right now. Ask Him to forgive your life of sin and to be the LORD of your life. Accept the fact that He died on the cross for the forgiveness of your sin and determine this day to obey Him and Him only. Begin reading His Word, the Bible, every day. Start in the book of John so you can know Who He really is, and join a good Bible teaching church. If you come to Him in sincerity, He will not turn you away. Only then can you know what it means to really be free.
