“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
This is one of my favorite passages of scripture in all of the Bible. God so graciously invites us to call unto Him. What does He mean when He says “call” unto Him? He means just that. Call Him. Anytime day or night. Talk to Him. Got a problem on your mind that you just can’t seem to resolve? Call Him. Is your marriage in trouble? Call Him. Do you have children for whom you are concerned because they appear to be throwing their lives away? Or they are making foolish decisions and you cannot seem to get them to understand how foolish they are? Call Him. Are you unemployed? Sick? Depressed? Lonely? Call on the Lord. That is what He wants you to do.
Now I know, this seems very simple. And maybe you have tried prayer and you don’t think that anything has happened in your situation because it looks the same. Your marriage is still broken…you are still headed for divorce court. Your child is still going down the wrong path. You have applied for every job in Sunday’s paper, and you still have not gotten a call. You are still sick. You are still depressed. You are still lonely. And here I am telling you to call on the Lord…
That’s right. I am telling you to call on the Lord. Just because the situation does not appear to have changed doesn’t mean that He did not hear you. Just because you are still lonely does not mean that you are alone. God is near. He cares about the things that concern you. He loves you so much that He gave His only Son to pay the ransom for your sin. The ransom was so high that there was no way you could have paid it on your own. And if He loved you enough to give His Son, then of course He cares about your earthly situations, which are trivial by comparison.
Not only does He want us to call on Him, but He says that when He does, He will show us great and mighty things, which we know not. Oh my! You and I have absolutely no idea how great a future plan God has for us! Now, He may not have material riches, fame, accolades, worldwide notoriety and such in store for us, but He has something that is greater by far: that is, eternity in heaven with Him! All of us who have repented of our sins and believed on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ while we were alive here on earth will have the benefit of spending forever and ever and ever in the presence of the Almighty God Who created the heavens and the earth. We will witness the angels singing “Holy, Holy, Holy” at the foot of the throne all day every day forever. We will live in a land where there is no more unemployment, no more sickness, disease, pain, or loneliness. The old church mothers used to say “every day will be Sunday!” They were right. Everyday will be the Lord’s day in heaven. We can be there with Him to experience it if we only believe in His Name, repent of our sins, and publicly confess Him by the act of baptism. If you do not have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, or if you think you do, but you are not sure, do not let this moment in time pass. Call Him. Tell Him that you are a sinner and you want a Savior. He said in His Word that He will answer you, and I know that He will show you great and mighty things which you know not.
